  • This is what you'll hear on my ringback ironically.

Here’s the dealio... Ben and I started Jangl to bridge people on the web with their phones. We’ve built this capability contextually into the social web, have done the deals to distribute and evangelize it. That’s probably how you heard about Jangl in the first place.

We accomplished more than most companies do on the amount of money we raised and the time we spent on it. And in our opinion it needed another 18-24 months worth of runway to realize its fullest potential; but at the end of the day every venture capitalist has their own coefficient of venture. To that end, we took company forward into an M&A process. Unfortunately with much bigger things happening in the marketplace it turned out to be the worst time in a few years to be selling. We were just days from closing an M&A transaction which was going to mean good things for all involved. But there are more ways deals can blow up than there are ways for them to stick. So it blew up, and now the company is responding to acquisition interest. Ben and I resigned Tuesday and put our heads together to figure out how we can keep as many of our great team together, and still pursue our passion for being the web's phone.

The end result is Ben and I, along with five others have been acquired as a team into Jajah. They are signing lots of deals and want to sign even more, which is what I do, and they need those deals integrated which is what Ben does. It’s a perfect compliment, and in a fast growing environment, and with a great group of people. Jajah have obviously found a sustainable groove so we're going to round out their team and take this to the next level. We’ll have our best feet forward in terms of seeing our passion through, only with a different jersey on. (Hey, look what happened when Pau Gasol joined the Lakers...) Game on.

I want to publicly thank the people that have sweat right by me in the trenches at Jangl, especially: Tim Johnson for his relentless push of our news (he is off to creating a great agency so reach him at whitespinnaker at gmail dot com); Aaron Burcell for his loyalty, savvy, drinks and programatic prowess; Brian Longest for his noiseless thinking and execution; Azeem Butt for getting us on a dev schedule we should have been on years ago; Sue Flemming and Chris B for all the mad design skillz; Matt O for the details and chocolate rain; James Huie for doing 3 jobs in one; Neil Alarcon for holding down the back end; Matt Murillo for the beautiful front end work; Henry Muljono for the smiles and more great front end work; Yuriy & Alex for banging out releases; and finally Chris Hadsell from Cardinal for believing in my franchise every step of the way. I’ll miss you all and will see some of you sooner than later.

If anyone has any further questions, they can wait for the book:)

  • I've not blogged much if any about this, but I am a certified yoga teacher. I practice the physical aspects of yoga a few times a week these days, but I practice the non physical aspects of yoga daily. Actually, it's probably the reason I'm still in one piece after the last five years. Anyway, I'm very conscious of what I put in my body. I avoid high sugar based energy drinks and don't drink coffee. I tend to start the day with a Naked juice, which suits me just fine. But by mid afternoon I find I need a little something-something. Water is the norm, but is boring. Today I tried a sample of a new, natural drink made by "Phix".

The guy that created Phix was the same guy that created the wrap, so there's cred there. What's more is I met the guy when he was at venture firm Maveron a few years ago. I remember Will Weisman being cerebral and earnest, which for some reason makes me feel even more interested in getting my Phix. I ran into Will at the TED conference a couple months back and had a chance to reconnect and get my first Phix. (By the way, I am bummed that after attending TED two years in a row now, they aren't allowing me to attend next year's. I got a note saying they are overwhelmed by the large number of people and others have higher credentials. I guess being an entrepreneur, being in two bands, a yoga teacher, a youth coach, a parent, and even a blogger covering TED isn't what it used to be).

Try a 3 pack and get your fix.

  • You've come to know Cerdafied as a source of startup tales, people involved in them and a whole bunch of random minutiae. Now you can enjoy it in a whole host of new ways, all over the social web, and well - everywhere for that matter. Afterall, you're nobody unless you have your own API! Yes, you heard it right... developers can now mash up their apps with Cerdafied!

Truth is, I've spent a lot of time on my new API. It's not time I particularly have, given the responsibility I have here at Jangl. But after watching the way so many apps have proliferated, I felt that -- if I was going to invest the time in blogging here, I may as well invest the time in building ways to share it.

With the new Cerdafied API, developers and communities can integrate my content in a variety of ways, and with their own look-and-feel. In fact, I've built out a small server farm, too, set up in the pool house where guests normally stay. This means I can even host your app, as well. I've created tons of support documentation, including a developer wiki and a hosted weekly developer chat, so getting Cerdafied integrated should be a pain-free process.

I've been working with some major developers already and, while I can't name names just yet, here's a preview of what you'll see in coming weeks:

    - Been working with a set-top box maker on a keyword-matching technology. Basically, if you're watching any of several news channels, the app "listens" to the CC stream, pulling up snippets of Cerdafied content when a keyword match is made. With one click, you can pull up the blog on your screen and reduce the TV broadcast to a small inset box. When you're done reading, you can restore the screen as needed.

    - Also been working with a top-tier, best-of-breed social network on a simple "favorites" app. Basically, when you add friends, they can be sent your favorite Cerdaified post, and can rate it and then find/share their own. Think of it like me replacing Tom on MySpace -- friends with everyone, and Cerdafied content just going crazy-big.

    - Lastly -- and this is one I'm pretty excited about -- I'm working with a major QSR chain (that's "quick service restaurant," new industry lingo designed to replace "fast food restaurant"). Essentially, when consumers go through a drive-thru line, they'll see a new screen adjacent to the screens that highlight the product. This new screen will feature a picture of me (it can feature any picture, actually, but right now it's all about "Mike" and "Cerdafied") alongside my latest blog post. That means I'll be cross-promoting occasionally. For example, a post about raising new funding might include a final tagline that reads something like, "Order the new Triple BaconFest for just $1.99, now through May 31." Those posts will be featured on the drive thru screens. How cool is that?

Like I said, there will be more to come. But in the meantime, mark your calendars for Memorial Day weekend, because that's when I'll be hosting CXNW -- Cerdafied by Northwest. Basically, a bunch of us are going to go up to the Mendocino Coast, drink, and talk about Cerdaified mash-ups and whatnot.

Fifty free invites are available to the first commenters on this post.

We'll be serving Triple BaconFests, too.

  • This is what you get when you're ultra connected to email and phone 24/7, with devices such as a Blackberry or iPhone. For most of my working career, one of the things people have consistently told me they liked about working with me, has been my rapid responsiveness to communication. The good in it is real-time progress and higher output per minute. The bad is you become prone to non-clinical ADD, not paying divided attention to those who matter most, and you increase your time to stress.

To treat this disease, it's best to leave your phone alone sometimes. For example, I had an important business partner in the office all day last week. For the first time since I can remember, I left my phone in my office while I went to a meeting in a nearby conference room. It allowed to keep undivided attention and focus on my business partner while eliminating distractions. I've got to believe I soaked up so much more and contributed so much more than I would have, had I been checking my phone email and texts during the meeting. Sounds obvious, but seldom practiced.

On the home front, I typically carry my phone around until bedtime, then I charge it on my nightstand. The other night I was checking emails and one of my investors had some heavy discussion points I needed to tend to. This email-a-thon went round and round for hours, breeding animosity, stress, disease and ultimate distraction from my duty as a parent and husband. Bad outcome for all involved... So the next night I tried leaving my phone in the car when I got home from work. Within an hour of being home, I was grilling some fish, talking with my wife, shooting some hoops with my son, etc. Then after everyone went to bed, I played my bass for a while and wrote a chapter for a book I'm working on. The next morning I read emails from my phone at the gym, and had answered all the important ones before even breaking a sweat. The uglies in my inbox waited until I got to work to start dealing with them. What a night and day difference in quality.

The moral of the story here...don't confuse real-time progress with real-time stress. Don't let the convenience of being always-on suck the life out of you!

  • It's never been easier to be completely overwhelmed with information. Lots of companies address your personal information filter needs. In the early days your my.pickyourISP.com did this for you from a portal perspective. Then of course Yahoo! did it, Google, Netvibes and others. Then of course you have RSS readers and so forth. I've been using a combination of iGoogle and RSS feeds (things I consider PUSH based because the content is generated for me) to the various blogs I track, but I found out about another option recently.

Alltop is a site that lets you sort all the top stories in various categories so that you have a topical page to browse headlines and dig into what suits you. While I find I'm accessing more information on a daily basis (read: I'm more informed now), I'm also realizing that even the most niche topic of interest can take forever to browse through completely. So while I'm trying to use Alltop, I feel like I'm failing because I can't get to all of the content on any given day. I guess I need the Alltop of the Alltop. Will keep trying here and maybe I'll find the right balance of time/content/info/gratification. In any case, I smell a huge opportunity for companies focused on next generation approaches to personal productivity and automation.

  • This site and this site both rave about how Evite sucks, and offer some Evite alternatives. One of the sites points out how Evite means "avoid" in Spanish.

Well, I actually knew this, being Mexican and all. I used Socializr for my Mexican New Year's party a few months ago. It was really easy, and even allowed me to apply some theme music. I was impressed that it even had a mariachi song I wanted to use in the catalog.
